Spotted At Couture Babushka Chic

Gaultier was showing twisting turbans and Galliano (with an assist from Stephen Jones) wrapped his girls’ heads like flower-shop bouquets, but we’re just as intrigued by some headgear spotted in the crowd—the babushka-style shawls favored by Uliana Sergeenko. The Russian couture client and photographer has been bringing a Muscovite breeze to the Paris shows with her wraps. It’s unexpected, but it works. Tommy Ton snapped her in two different versions as she made her way through the week.

Recessionista Ballerina Girl

See other celeb-favored summer steals!

I love the petal blush color and the contrasting grosgrain ribbon that’s slightly distressed and curled on these Urban Outfitters leather ballet flats. These flats come in two colors — champagne and black — and are only available online.

Dressed up with an LBD or down with boyfriend jeans and a cardigan, these flats are perfect for showing that girly yet practical side.

Ballerina slippers never go out of style. They’re so pretty and femme in a world of buckles and bondage. Not everyone is going to want to channel the King of Pop this Fall, so here’s a change.

Objects Of Desire

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Miu Miu is debuting its third short film in a series dedicated to exploring love—women’s love affair with Miu Miu, that is. Following Zoe Cassavetes’ The Powder Room and Lucrecia Martel’s MUTA, Giada Colagrande’s The Woman Dress is centered around a dark, all-female world of glamour and desire. The short stars the trio (Heather D’Angelo, Erika Forster, and Annie Hart) from electric pop group Au Revoir Simone as witches (wearing Miu Miu’s new Culte sunglasses and chanting to a soundtrack they wrote for the film) along with Indian actress Maya Sansa, who transforms into the object of her desire—a bloodred Miu Miu dress, naturally. The full film will be unveiled tonight at a private screening in New York, but Style.com got an exclusive first look. Below, watch a teaser for the film.

You Can Walk A Mile In These Shoes

In terms of fashion pet peeves, few things are so cringe-worthy as a woman wearing heels she can’t handle. Some (certain Paris Vogue editors and street style stars come to mind) have the ability to glide by in six-plus inches, while others are forced into an awful hobble accompanied by an appropriately pained expression.

For the latter, it’s heartening to see shoe designers addressing the not-so-sexy issue of comfort. In Paris, I went to see shoe label Aperlaï, whose designer, the very stylish Alessandra Lanvin, doesn’t want you to have to stow a pair of Repetto BB’s in your bag in case you can’t find a taxi. “In Paris, we walk everywhere,” said Lanvin. “You should be able to do that in your heels.” Her techniques include padding the sole where the ball of the foot rests and creating a heel that’s essentially an elongated pyramid with the top lopped off. It reads spindly but is secretly sturdy. And seeing as Lanvin produces in the same Italian factory as Alaïa and Prada, these ideas are all but guaranteed to have excellent execution. The master cobblers were also able to sew raffia into leather for a gorgeous grouping for Spring 2011 (above left). Other collection highlights: the classic spectator recast in mesh and leather with a flash of color, and slingbacks in navy silk faille that tie up like a gift.

Then there’s Korean-born designer Raphael Young, whose in-your-face fierce aesthetic would lead you to believe that the idea of a comfortable heel would be completely anathema (below left). But Young, who this week opened his first boutique (at 23 Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau, in the first arrondissement), grew up exposed to the ne plus ultra of cobbling craftsmanship. His uncle (through his adoptive French family) is Alexandre Narcy, who set up the shoe studio at Yves Saint Laurent. During a visit to Young’s boutique, the designer revealed that he’ll soon unveil a patented technology that makes 110-mm shoes feel like your Nikes. Here’s to the end of the High-Heel Hobble.

Anna Vs. Anna

Stylist Keegan Singh dug through Rodarte’s archives and pulled out some of Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s most sparkling creations for their new trippy film, Anna vs. Anna. In the supernatural-inspired short, by director and photographer Barnaby Roper, model Anna Jagodzinska wears an array of Swarovski Elements-encrusted pieces. Of the project, Roper explains, “This film is a journey from darkness to light. It starts off in a very dark place, and then we slowly come out of it into the light.” View the film, which debuted exclusively on Dazed Digital today, above.

Noticed Jim Carrey

The fashion-and-style scene has its share of celebrity goers-and-comers. But one that we’ve been noticing of late—maybe because, well, we didn’t peg him as the type—is rubbery comedian Jim Carrey. He cut a small but decided swath through fashion week and attended the dinner and after-party for Marchesa’s Spring ‘11 collection. (Here he is above, meeting Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, with husband Harvey Weinstein, as Rachel Zoe looks on.) He then got spotted by the fashion crowd at Tuesday’s Shakira concert at Madison Square Garden. (Several editors, including Style.com’s beauty editor, were on hand to see the Colombian pop star perform to celebrate the launch of her fragrance—though none were seen to take cell phone video of the performance, as Carrey did.) And last night, Carrey rubbed elbows with the hordes of Brazilian bombshells—Gisele and Fernanda Motta among them—at the after-party for the Brazil Foundation gala at the Boom Boom Room.

What gives? To be honest, we’re not sure. According to IMDB, he’s currently developing a film adaptation of Where’s Waldo?—maybe he’s researching striped clothing. (Two words in that case, Jim: Saint James.) Pet detectives, if you’ve got any more clues, feel free to leave them below.

Find Out the ’70s Style Stars Are Raving About!

I’m sorry, but I am completely obsessed with these high-heeled clogs. Thank you, Chanel and Louis Vuitton, for thinking of me and throwing them up on the spring runways. And thank you, Alexa Chung, for daring to wear them. I just can’t get enough. I guess it’s just something from the ’70s that I loved the most as a kid — seeing all these people, including myself, walking around Greenwich Village in these big clunky shoes.

I love these though because, believe it or not, they are comfortable. (Warning: They may only  be comfortable for those who are used to this type of height. I have been training for this!)

If you can’t stand something this high, then obviously don’t do it — you’ll never wear them. But if you do dig it, then you can skip the french clogs and go over to Zara immediately — or call them — and ask for the high-heel, strapped clog for $149.

It will be worth it if you love it.

Ben Feldman, who plays Michael Ginsberg on the AMC series, co-owns a burgeoning Syrah-focused brand called Angelica Cellars that’s available at Providence, Street and Spago.

The ladies on Lifetime’s Drop Dead Divas are constantly drinking vino. Which is why co-star Ben Feldman, who’s appeared on the show since the beginning, has fruitlessly spent years “begging” Divas’ producers to put his own wine—a Syrah made from Central Coast grapes that he and childhood friend Eduardo Porto Carreiro sell under the name Angelica Cellars—on the program. “There was always so much red tape,” he says. “I’d bring empty bottles and they’d always use these fake ones created by the prop guys instead. I don’t know if it was an issue on Lifetime’s end or [production company] Sony’s end. But it never happened.”

Prints Pedro

“I went to Atacama and Patagonia and fell in love with the atmosphere that the scenario and silence bring,” designer Pedro Lourenço tells Style.com of the locales that inspired the eye-catching prints in his recent pre-fall collection. “The colors, textures, and emptiness are amazing.”

Lourenço artfully transferred the natural beauty of Patagonia into something more urban, using the digital prints on sleeveless shells and dresses. “I wanted to create windows on the woman’s body so that the landscape could be seen through them,” he says of the process.

When we first laid eyes on Lourenço’s tropical Resort prints by artist Lelli de Orleans e Bragança back in June, we fell in love, as have his clients—the collection is selling quite well at Barneys. It’s safe to assume this round will be no different when it hits stores. As for what’s ahead, he revealed, “The prints for the Fall collection will be done in collaboration with a contemporary artist based in New York. They will be less figurative, more abstract.” Until then, stay tuned.
